Good morning folks. I’d like to ask if you have any opinion about the republishing of diaries to the various groups you are members of. For examples, here in Colorado, there are (that I know of) the Colorado COmmunity group, of which I’m a blog administrator, and the Four Corners Kossacks, organized and run by Thinking Fella. Diaries can be republished to those groups by members of the groups who have the requisite privilege level and it came to my attention this past week that some diaries are being published to Colorado Community that aren’t particularly (that I can see) related to the mission of the group. The Mission says:
Coloradoans and allies who want to keep our skies blue, our water clean and plentiful, our wildlife diverse and populous, our people healthy and employed, our renewable energy developed, and our tax policies returned to sane, sustainable levels.
In general, the diaries have been in some way related to Colorado. They’ve been about Colorado politics, significant people who have ties to Colorado, natural resources like wildlife that are found in Colorado, research efforts and space launches tied to Colorado’s universities and space industries, yesterday’s Saturday Morning Garden blog that had photos from our resident Merry Light about Colorado’s fall leaf colors, micro-brews, foodie items and other things that can be tied to the interests of Coloradans.
Recently, some diaries have been posted to Colorado COmmunity (I haven’t checked the Four Corners group) that I cannot figure out how they relate to Colorado at all, other than they’ve been posted by someone who is a member of the Colorado COmmunity group. If you’d like to go to the Colorado COmmunity group, you can go find the diaries that I’m referring to — they’re probably fairly obvious. I do republish diaries to Colorado COmmunity that I find wandering about the greater Daily Kos sphere that I think will be of interest to Coloradans. Sometimes the ties are down the diary aways — like one of the political race diaries that happens to mention one of our down-ballot races but it isn’t mentioned until the diary is several paragraphs old. You may be wondering why something talks about Indiana, Oregon and Georgia but is published in Colorado COmmunity but eventually it will say “and in Colorado’s House District Four race, the Republican candidate gave away an Uzi as a door prize at a boy scout jamboree” or some such tie-in (and no, that was made up as an illustration, that hasn’t happened as far as I know). You can likely republish diaries to the Colorado COmmunity group as well — we made it so people could by default republish diaries so we don’t have to monitor and approve requests for republishing (which could delay and make diaries stale by the time we get around to them). It just seems like there have been some being republished that someone wanted to get more eyes onto them rather than having them have some actual tie to Colorado.
I don’t even know if you folks go to the Colorado COmmunity group or the Four Corners Group to look for diaries that are a bit more focused than the whole Daily Kos sphere itself. I’ve passed along a suggestion that for the next version of Daily Kos, the groups show why a diary was republished within a group as well as who republished it — that can give a clue who and why they thought you might want to take a look, but if you like that idea, please also put forward that idea and the more voices clamoring for such a request, the more likely it is that they’ll try and incorporate it.
I’d love to hear your thoughts. On that or any other topic. This is an open thread on Colorado. Or for people interested in Colorado to opine on any issue. Go Broncos!
