Good day and welcome to DKos Asheville. This is the weekly DKos Asheville Open Thread for Saturday, June 10th.
We offer this space every weekend to share what we're up to in Western North Carolina and beyond.
We hope this group and others serve to invigorate us locally and regionally here on Daily Kos, building on the sense of community that's grown through our online engagement.
DKos Asheville and other local and state groups can give us all a better sense of connection, a better understanding of who we stand with, work with and share with. We hope this local and wider community can help leverage our orange passion for progressive politics to move the county forward.
Following is the Daily Kos Mission Statement and we are proud to be part of this movement, on the keyboards and on the ground.
Daily Kos fights for a progressive America by empowering its community and allies with information and tools to directly impact the political process.

Click here to add your nameIf you are downtown this morning through early afternoon, come down to the South Slope for Expand Fest, a new festival celebrating diversity in art and culture. I’ll be strolling with juggling and magic and a red hat.
In trying to choose between available dates, I had settled on the following Saturday instead of the 12th. I then realized that parking and traffic might be a little challenging. (See below) Have a great weekend!
Don't miss experiencing a rare total solar eclipse in western North Carolina near Asheville on Monday, August 21, 2017. Jackson County, Swain County and Graham County - all located about 50-70 miles west of Asheville - are some of the few areas in country where you can experience the extremely rare celestial phenomenon of a total solar eclipse. Towns in the direct path will include Sylva, Dillsboro, Cashiers, Bryson City, Cherokee and Robbinsville, with one to two minutes of complete darkness as the moon moves in front of the sun. Even the city of Asheville will see a 99% eclipse.
Make lodging reservations now since many people will be traveling to this area from around the world to experience this amazing event. At 2:36 PM, the Carolina blue sky will turn pitch black. Temperatures will drop, and stars will come out as the sun disappears. While the total eclipse is just a couple of minutes, the transition will begin about 1 PM and end around 4 PM. Since we expect many visitors, you should be at your viewing location well before noon.
Even though Mt. Mitchell isn’t in the direct total eclipse path, I imagine a pretty sizable crowd will be at the top of the mountains on 8/21.
