I don’t have much to discuss today — still on the job hunt, and contemplating just where I’m willing to work just to get benefits.  I was hoping for an interview today.  If you’re reading this, it still hasn’t happened yet.

Texas and their hurricane problem is on the minds of many here in Colorado.  Colorado Blue, IIRC, had a link to the Denver Post article about a few dozen Colorado first responders who’ve traveled to the Houston area to help out.  Have any of you been through a hurricane?  I went through Alicia when she went into Houston in 1983.  Category 3 in the Gulf, she may have been a 2 by the time of landfall.  Basically a big series of thunderstorms and some flooding, but nothing close to what’s happening now.

Do you all have your go-bags in case of emergencies?  Here in Colorado we don’t often have issues with flooding (though the floods in 2013 are a glaring exception) and when we do, it’s likely to be sudden rather than like in Texas where they’ve had a couple of days to get ready.  Tornadoes are similarly sudden storms, while forest fires in Colorado are sometimes quick, sometimes it takes a day or longer for the fire to reach people, but it’s more devastating than many other disasters because you can’t just dry stuff out afterwards.  That stuff is gone.  Blizzards don’t often get people to evacuate, but it’s helpful to have thought ahead to what the lack of electricity, phones and roads might mean.  Even man-caused disasters, like the bomb trains traveling on our train tracks down through Denver, or other trains and trucks with chemicals that might spread toxic gasses into the air or water at any time, or even terrorist attack (and I’m including the potential that Colorado is supposedly within the range of North Korea’s missiles) — all of these are possible reasons for a home to be evacuated for hours to days with no notice.  Do you have any tips/suggestions for the go-bags?

Feel free to discuss anything about disasters or other issues on your mind.
