The Colorado State Open Thread is for people interested in, residing here or just Colorado-curious to stop by, see what we’re about, and to tell us what’s on your minds.  If you have photos, stories or just want to hang out, please join us.

Well, it wasn’t really a snowpocalypse.  Weather forecasters had been predicting up to around eight feet of snow for some areas of the Colorado Front Range from last Tuesday through the beginning of this week.  The nutty predictions came first from a forecaster who works for a ski website, so you can understand why I, and several of my friends, were a bit skeptical because this person had a bit of motivation to predict huge snow totals, draw people to the lift lines and make up for some of the revenue lost due to Covid restrictions on the slopes.

Totals for many areas in the foothills were still projected to be above two feet and grocery stores, gas stations and other places were crowded and selling out starting around Tuesday of last week, when the first snowflakes were to fall.  Well, up here, we got a couple inches and then pretty much nothing Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  I started to doubt weathermen who were projecting multiple feet of snow, but the story had changed.  Now the storm was slowing, so when it DID hit, it would dump even more snow because it wasn’t moving. I had a friend from Denver who canceled his trip to visit us over the weekend not because of the beginning snow but because of the massive snow on Sunday when he’d be trying to head home.

We don’t know what left these tracks. The feet were a little smaller than our Cocker spaniel, but the swooshes are likely to be a tail, so, a fox? Then why a double track?

Well, finally, Friday we had some snow start up here.  And then it stopped.  Saturday morning it was still not snowing until about midday.  When it did start, it just kept snowing.  The pictures (other than the tracks) are from Sunday midday, so after about 24 hours of snow.  It totaled perhaps about two feet of snow, but considering how it compressed the bottom snow, maybe it was a bit more.  I dug pathways for Ginger, our Cocker spaniel who usually loves the snow but this time it was more than she wanted to handle.  I was very happy to have the crew I have contracted with to clear my driveway show up today to clear a path so I can make it out with a car.

I’ve heard some totals that were about three feet deep, like up in Nederland, but no totals that were the 5-8 feet variety that were predicted with “scare quotes”.  Did you get any snow? Did you get the snowpocalypse?  Do you have any photos to share?  Please put your comments on this or any other topics that are of interest down below.  The ski slope is open…

Heading up the hill, wandering left around the log and then right again.

Are there snowpeople having a tea party?

How about a BBQ instead?

The pine siskins didn’t have to go hungry or thirsty.

Ginger exploring the new pathways

What’s this that I sniff before me?

Planters and gardens will be full of life.  Hopefully in a couple months or so.
