What are y’all doing this coming Monday to celebrate Martin Luther King’s birthday? Now I could go into a long history of who the man was, where he came from, what he means to African Americans in particular, and the rest of the people of the United States and world in general, but there will be far better stories and diaries here and around the Internet so I won’t bother writing my own, but I will be reading to add to my knowledge.
What I would like to do, if I’m able to, is to go to a public DA candidate forum in Denver after the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade. The “Marade” (from March and Parade) will start at 10AM downtown at City Park at the MLK Jr. Memorial and travel starting at 10:45AM to Civic Center Park. There will be festivities there, ending around 1PM. Information on the Marade can be found at www.thedenverear.com/… Information is also there for the showing of the movie “Selma” this Saturday at the People’s Presbyterian Church. The Martin Luther King Jr. African-American Rodeo of Champions that will be held again at the Stock Show (oh yes, that’s in town as well).
Boulder’s list of events can be found here.
Fort Collins and Loveland’s events can be found here.
Lafayette has a march — details can be found here.
The National Park System has a free admission day on MLK Jr’s birthday as well, so that would cover many participants all over the state.
The Denver DA candidate forum will be coming up Monday the 18th in the afternoon. More details are at www.facebook.com… (this can be accessed without a facebook account — I know because I don’t have one that I know of).
Apparently the current DA said that the non-indictment of the police who shot Tamir Rice within a second of arrival was a reasonable decision.
Here’s the announcement in full (I don’t think they’d mind more spreading the word — that’s what this basically was intended for)
SAVE THE DATE Fellow Colorado organizations, alliances, community members. and other interested groups, Since early 2015, an important coalition has been forming. This coalition, ( The Denver Justice Project ) has been focused on the power of the District Attorney's office as well as on the critical 2016 D.A.‘s election. This movement began with an unprecedented effort to recall current DA Mitch Morrissey from office, an effort which helped educate the public about the influence of the District Attorney--Colorado’s highest paid state elected official. The D.A.’s office has the potential to transform an oppressive criminal justice system, to reduce mass incarceration, and to hold law enforcement accountable in cases of excessive force and homicide. On January 18th, 2016, at The Trinity Methodist Church located at 1820 Broadway (18th and Broadway) following the MLK March, we will be having a community discussion and forum with the four current DA candidates. We ask that you save this date and support this issue in the way that is appropriate for your organization. Publicizing the event and advocating turn-out individually and to your congregations/groups is especially important. We also need volunteers at the event to pass out fliers and to assist with other logistical matters. Thank you in advance for your participation. Also, if anyone knows anyone who is in need of community service hours, we would be happy to sign off on time donated Please contact Alex Landau with any questions or concerns. email: alexanderlandau89@gmail.com
