However, this is one I photographed on my driveway last summer about midnight, in a misty-rainstorm. The less than perfect photo is a reason why I wound up getting a better camera for low-light situations. Now I’m looking at those ads for the Samsung Galaxy S22 and thinking maybe one of those might be handy when I don’t have my fancy one. I almost always have my phone with me.
Last week’s photo was one of my own from the ticket office and concession stand at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. The “rocket ship” was mounted on top of the booth for buying tickets. John in Denver was the only person who responded to the location for that picture.

Did you know that the original Air Force Academy was established at Lowry before it was moved a few years later to the permanent location in Colorado Springs? This is now the location for a very neat museum, theater and education center and I encourage people to go for a tour.

Kosack xerorest posted a picture of a waterfall in the comments and asked where that was. I believe it was Bridalveil Falls, and hopefully xerorest will return and confirm or correct that identification. It was a very beautiful picture; I need to experiment some more with my camera to try and get the picture of the water flowing rather than just water at one moment in time.
What is with all the fires between Boulder and Golden, Louisville and Superior? In case you didn’t hear, another fire popped up on Saturday near the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which is located on a flat space just south of Boulder and in front of the Flatiron peaks by Eldorado Canyon State Park. Fortunately, no buildings were burned in the fire named for NCAR, but the flames were whipped into a frenzy by medium-strength wind gusts in much the same way the very strong wind gusts whipped the Marshall Fire into a conflagration that burned over 1000 homes and businesses at the end of December in Superior and Louisville. As I type this, there is no known cause for the fire yet, and that’s similar to the Marshall Fire, which as of a month ago was still of an undetermined origin. Fire managers are reminding people that there are “only 365 days in a fire season in Colorado”. I don’t know if you saw photos, but there were snowbanks right next to the burning grasses and trees, so even snow wasn’t a deterrent.
There were also fires in Larimer County and one in the SE Denver metro over the weekend and today, a new fire popped up between Estes Park and Drake (about 12 or so miles downhill towards Loveland). It’s purely coincidental that one of the major government facilities for studying climate change / warming should be the location of a fire during snow season. We are looking forward to the temporary help more rain and/or snow will provide this week on Wednesday and Friday.
On a lighter note, Representative Boebert… No, seriously folks, there have been lawsuits trying to prevent Representative Cawthorn of North Carolina and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from being able to run for their seats in Congress because of the post-Civil War era law saying that someone who supports or participates in an insurrection or rebellion may not run for or serve in an elected office. The North Carolina case was denied, but there is an appeal, and the one for MTG in Georgia is still ongoing. I would like to think Representative Boebert could be similarly sued and maybe even have her barred from office. Unfortunately, I have never seen any report about the tours she supposedly led in the days leading up to January 6th and whether those may have been scouting missions for the insurrectionists. Because we’ve never seen reports, and because there must have been people on video and visitor logs, especially if they were going into areas closed to the general public, I reluctantly have to conclude that they may be just as Representative Boebert claims, that they were for family and they had nothing to do with January 6th. I guess we will have to depend upon the voters to pass judgement on her fitness for office and I hope the answer is “No way in Hell.” Does anyone have further information on polling or on those tours?
www.getmoresmarter.com is a podcast where:
This week in episode 102 of the Get More Smarter Podcast, hosts Jason Bane and Ian Silverii examine the results of a very strange weekend for Colorado Republicans at their county assemblies.
Later, we talk with Congressman Joe Neguse (D-Boulderish) about campaigning in a newly-redrawn congressional district; chairing the U.S. House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands; passage of legislation to create the Amache National Historic Site; and his efforts to assist Ukrainian refugees escaping the war with Russia.
Also, from Colorado Politics, our own Kosack John in Denver alerted me to the following rally:
One week from tomorrow (Tuesday, April 5th) the loudest election conspiracy theorist in America “MyPillow Guy” Mike Lindell will be in Colorado to headline a rally for his dear friend and recipient of much Big Pillow largesse, indicted but still-in-it-to-win-it Secretary of State candidate Tina Peters. Also headlining is the Colorado GOP U.S. Senate primary’s leading “election truther” Ron Hanks–potentially delivering a big boost for both candidates with Republican party faithful ahead of the crucial GOP state assembly the following weekend. While some local Republicans are calling, in a few cases pleading for the party to move on from Donald Trump and focus on gains in the upcoming midterms, a majority of Republicans according to polls are still not ready to do that. This rally is for them, and if you think it’s crazy then this rally is simply not for you.
Also, Denver is the capital city of Colorado but the building is the State Capitol.
If we’re going to get into correcting these people, that’s the smallest of potatoes.

U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert touts funding wins she voted against
Spending was part of a federal package signed into law last week
WASHINGTON – A newsletter distributed by U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert’s office this week touts “nine Boebert wins for Colorado,” but all nine items were included in a bill that the representative voted against earlier this month.
Boebert celebrated investments worth about $2.3 billion and measures such as preventing the use of federal money to pay for abortions, but several of the identified sums are distributed to localities on an annual basis or benefit national programs and initiatives.
“Without selling my soul and my votes through the corrupt earmark process, we were able to get lots of great things done and into federal statute through the normal appropriations process,” Boebert said in the newsletter.
Of course, there’s more hole digging (click on the link here)
