The Colorado State Open Thread is for you, the reader. Or, if you don’t wish to read, there are photos you can view and perhaps puzzle out exactly what symbolism, location or topic they might be here to be present for.  Of course, if you don’t wish to read, you’re not reading these words.  Oh well, have fun!

Last week’s photo was quickly identified as some White Faced Ibis that were having an enjoyable morning next to Lake Estes.

Breeding plumage, according to one of the readers

Flying in formation, while displaying their long, curved bills

Looking for breakfast.  There was a small herd of curious deer just to the right.

Migratory birds are flying through now, though some have already passed through and some others are still winging their way north.  We already have many loud and raucous hummingbirds setting up nests and fighting each other for the one feeder we have out this year (some of you may recall we had a bear come and sample the feeders last year when we had several left out). We have had robins for at least two months and we’re still waiting on some other migration visitors.

Other signs of spring include the male elk growing antlers (now covered with “velvet”) and females looking ready to pop with one or two (maybe even three) babies to give birth to.  When I get pictures of a fawn, elk or deer, I’ll be posting those.

We may still have some snow this week, but as of today, I have only a trace of snow remaining on the north side of the house where it piled up after sliding off the roof.  I wouldn’t expect any new snow to accumulate much, but last year we had several inches of snow come down on June 1st.  I hope, since the weather has been warm and dry, that we can get another snowfall or two to help recharge the snow cap before we get into the melt full-time. We certainly can use all the water we can store.

I’m not going to put up political notes today. The slate colored clouds, the fun of the eclipse last night and the fact I’ve got ribs cooking on the BBQ are all making me wish I’m someplace other than in front of the computer.  Sorry.  I’m still welcoming submissions on whatever subjects you’d like to write about — you can have your own photo puzzle (send it to me at colotim2010 @ gmail) or just have your own essay on whatever is on your mind.  I’d like this to be an open diary series as well as just an open thread.

Shaggy said to say “Hello” btw.  Won’t someone toss his toy for him?

He just wants several people to play with him.

The floor is open ...
