The Colorado State Open Thread is written for those interested in, those who have heard of, who have lived in, passed through, maybe even never come close to our square(ish) state but might be contemplating it in some future lifetime, well, this is for you.
Sometimes Colorado can be a state with stubborn politicians.
This first story is about those kind of people, but I happen to like these kind of stubborn people even though they can cost us money in legal fees. This is the article from the Colorado Sun:
A bill that would ban the manufacture and drastically restrict the sale of certain semiautomatic firearms that can accept detachable ammunition magazines in Colorado is now headed to Gov. Jared Polis’ desk after it cleared its final legislative hurdle Friday.
Polis has signaled he will sign the Democrat-backed measure, which would be one of the most restrictive gun regulations ever adopted in Colorado.
Senate Bill 3 would prohibit people from buying the otherwise banned weapons — most semiautomatic rifles as well as some semiautomatic pistols and shotguns — unless they get approved by their county sheriff and complete up to a dozen hours of training.
The key here are weapons that accept detachable magazines. Every Republican in both houses of the legislature voted against this legislation and there were some Democrats who also voted against the bill. The bill was watered down so it would meet Polis’ requirements for signing. This will not go into effect until 2026 to give time for the training to be set up and the Republicans have vowed to sue to overturn the legislation immediately upon implementation (of course). I expect that this and the other laws that about strengthening gun laws will likely be overturned, but I’m glad that our Democratic legislators are trying to make Colorado safer for us. I have no desire to have to live in a dangerous state just so yahoos can live out their dangerous fantasies.
