--— First off, don’t forget the Caffeinating Liberally this Saturday, April 28th, at Common Grounds Coffeeshop at 44th and Vallejo in Denver’s Highlands. I’m not sure if I have time to get there, but Leftcandid will be there to host --------------
I started to write this with the expectation towards this Thursday when the Secretary of State is supposed to release the list of candidates who, through the conventions or petitioning are on the official primary ballots for June 26, where we actually get to vote for who we want to then vote for in November. I am still fond of caucusing, but I’ve always been perplexed and not happy with the idea that all that effort spent caucusing doesn’t do much other than to position a few candidates on the ballot. There is always a lot of bragging about who gets the top line on the ballot and apparently it does make something of a difference to voters in studies that have been done, but I’m ready for November and for kicking Republican tail out of offices all over the state. It’s only about half a year away. We do still need to know just who we’ll be able to vote FOR in November.
So, while we wait for Thursday’s announcement (and the upcoming Republican challenges about their illegal petitioners), I thought I’d invite you to propose a date for a warm-weather meetup for Kossacks. I unfortunately won’t likely be able to attend, since I work Friday thru Monday from 10A-8:30P. The only real impact that will have, other than my not being there, is that my house will not be available for the gathering.
In the past, restaurants have been popular spots, and if it’s later on a Friday or Saturday, I might be able to get there for the tail end of the party. If someone wishes to host the party at their house, that’s great and I can help with some supplies, if necessary. You can even organize around an activity, like registering voters, putting up signs over freeways, a service project (clearing a trail of trash, whether that’s official or not), hiking to see wildflowers, a birdwalk, a tour of the Capitol, or even a day at a lake or park. If anyone has a particular skill, like photography, that can even provide an excuse to meet and share interests.
I’d like to recommend a time in July, as that will be a warm month, the primaries will be set, and it won’t be crunch time like September and October will be. It also won’t interfere with people’s plans for Glacier NP if they want to go. Take a look at calendars and see what weekends you might be able to spare, and post them here in the comments. If several people like the date, you can organize this through myself, Leftcandid or our designee. If nobody has any consensus, well, that would be disappointing.
I would also like to welcome an invitation from someone beyond the metro area. If someone wishes to host in, for example, Durango, Glenwood Springs, Colorado Springs, or where-ever, please also speak up. For a daytrip that far off, I think I could and would take a day off from work (or a couple in the case of Durango or other distant locale). I’d even be happy to provide a comfy carpool for a couple/three other Kossacks, especially if people chip in for gas.
Southern Colorado would be great to see who’s down there, or out at Durango if y’all want to do your train ride again. I haven’t been on that one. The Pike’s Peak Cog RR shut down operations and they are evaluating their business plan (dunno if they’re going to reopen or not), so we can’t recreate that ride/meetup.
As always, the floor is yours. Have a nice discussion.
